April Lion's Roar
The Lion's Roar
A Message from Father Rick...
The Can-Test—the contest of sculptures using canned food—raised 1,229lbs of food that was delivered directly to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.
We did it last year with just St Mark’s. This year we expanded to include St John on the Mountain, St Bernards, Congregation B’nai Israel, and the Basking Ridge Business Alliance. Plans are already moving ahead to expand this Can-Test even more in 2023.
I love these things which bring the community together, which highlight the Food Bank and the presence of hunger in our area, AND which are also a lot of fun! Beth Kujan won the St Mark’s Can-Test, John Lyga won the “Golden Can”, and the people who depend on the food bank to put dinner on their table won.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and it’s never too late to start thinking about what you’re going to do next year!

The 238th Diocesan Convention was conducted over Zoom on March 5. Bishop Stokes gave an opening address which acknowledged that the search for a new bishop is underway and that a new bishop election will be held on January 28, 2023. Bishop Stokes and Presiding Bishop Curry (via video greetings) assured us that a capable transition team is in place to lead the process. Bishop Stokes then continued with mention of new positions and staffing of current positions, and I briefly heard the name Mother Ann Urinoski mentioned, so I reached out to her to see what’s new. She is currently serving as Priest-In-Charge of two small parishes; Trinity Matawan and Christ Church South Amboy. These churches had affiliated and worked together to call her. Mother Ann mentioned that she believed Trinity was part of Tammy Young’s journey as well. In July, Mother Ann was appointed Chair of the Clergy Continuing Education Committee, which was mentioned at the convention. She sends her greetings to all at St. Mark’s. Later on in the convention, I also heard Chip Rubendall’s name mentioned on a list of candidates for ordination.
The convention also provided reports from active committees such as the Anti-Racism and Reparations Task Force, the Hispanic Outreach Committee, and the new Episcopal Community Services of New Jersey (ECS). The afternoon held presentations of the budget for 2022 and preliminary for 2023 as well as voting for slated positions. The next General Convention of the Episcopal Church will be held in Baltimore in July 2022.

Meal Train for The Aul Family
Please review the
calendar for Apri
if you are able to help deliver a meal. Linda & Dave have been so appreciative and grateful for your continued generosity.
It was terrific to see some of our Sunday School students at church practicing drums and building props for the Easter skit. With the warm weather approaching, we are planning to celebrate Easter Sunday like it is 2019. That means we’ll be having our Easter egg hunt after the 10 am service on April 17th.
While we expect the bunny will be prepared, if you know you’ll have some egg hunters joining us Easter morning,
please click here
and let us know; or email me, Kristen Hauser, your Christian Ed vestry rep, at
Otherwise, please watch the Weekly Roar for some opportunities to see all of your Sunday School friends soon – we’re planning an event at Ross Farm for later this spring.

God's Giving Garden
Thanks to everyone who supported the purchase of a second hive for our Giving Garden. We can all look forward to additional honey for sale and donation this Fall.
Now that the weather is warming, our garden expansion activities are underway again, along with garden clean-up, set-up, and first plantings, like peas and lettuces.
Watch for news about volunteer work sessions, coming soon
We will once again be collecting hams for distribution at the Food Bank for Easter. You may deliver your ham to the office during the week or on Sunday mornings to the kitchen refrigerator.
If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation and we will do the shopping.
